Nightgowns and nightshirts evolved from long smock-like garments worn by Europeans in the 19th Century. The garment was worn under the clothes of both men and women during the day, and then to bed at night. And then they wore the smocks again under their clothes the next day, and so on and so on. Gross. 19th Century European culture brought us a lot of wonderful things, personal hygiene is not one of them.
As long as you keep it laundered, this nightshirt should be much more hygienic. Plus it's probably funnier than 19th Century smocks, we don't know that for sure though, maybe they wrote funny quips on those babies.
